Garden at Hiean-jingu Shrine in winter – image © Jeffrey Friedl
Most visitors to Heian-jingu Shrine, in Northern Higashiyama, skip the back garden. That’s a mistake, because it’s superb. It looks especially nice under a coating of winter snow.
Every week a new Kyoto Photo is published here on Inside Kyoto. These beautiful, evocative photos are taken by either Jeffrey Friedl or Damien Douxchamps. You can follow the links to their respective sites to see more images by clicking on their image credit under each photo.
Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Shrine is one of the city’s most popular shrines for the all-important “hatsumode” (first shrine visit of the year). It will be packed with people on the first three days of the year, but it’s worth braving the crowds to feel the New Year energy.
