Fushimi-Inari Taisha Shrine is Kyoto’s most popular tourist attraction. It’s also the most iconic. The thousands of Shinto shrine gates (torii) are hypnotic to walk through. Just get there early to avoid the crowds.

The north bank of the Katsura-gawa River in Arashiyama is a great place for a walk. You can continue upstream and then take the stairs into Kameyama-koen Park and then get to the Bamboo Grove without dealing with the crowds.
