On the evening of August 16, huge flaming characters are set alight on hills around the city. The largest character is the “dai” character on Mt Daimonji. For details on the festival, see Kyoto Festivals.

Daimonji is our favorite mountain in Kyoto. The climb to the “Dai” character on the mountainside is the best hike near the city. On August 16th, during the Gozan-Okuribi Festival, the character will be set ablaze just after sunset. For details on the festival, see Kyoto Festivals. Held in mid-July, the Gion Maturi is Kyoto’s biggest and most extravagant festival. The main parade happens on July 17, but for several days leading up to the main event, you can enjoy the festival atmosphere downtown. For all the details, see our Gion Matsuri page.
