Nest at Nishiki Kyoto is a small but charming and well-designed boutique hotel. It’s right in the middle of downtown Kyoto along Yanaginobanba-dori Street, a stone’s throw from Nishiki Market. There’s plenty of shopping and great restaurants in the area. This makes it a convenient choice for anyone who wants to be near all the action. But, it’s also low key enough that you’ll have a quiet and relaxing stay.

This hotel has just 23 Western-style ensuite rooms. Rooms are just slightly more spacious than average for Japanese hotels, meaning it’s not a shoebox! Design-wise, though, they’ve made great use of space so that the rooms feel comfortable, not cramped.
We love the use of wood throughout, as well as traditional handicrafts in the interior decor, like the Japanese obi (kimono sashes) used to decorate the beds. The pillows and mattress are on the firm side, which is typical for Japanese hotels, but they’re very comfortable. The WiFi signal could be a little bit stronger, but it’s fast enough for most purposes.
In terms of amenities, they’ve clearly thought about what guests need in a hotel. There are the usual things like a safe and a 43-inch smart TV, but also a microwave and dishes – great for having breakfast in your room or light takeout dinners. There’s also a coffee machine with pods in it. A special mention must go to the shower with its high water pressure!
Like an increasing number of hotels in Japan these days, Nest at Nishiki Kyoto provides smartphones for guests to use during their stay. These “handy phones” are provided free of charge, and allow you to make free domestic calls, browse the internet and find your way around town. They’ll bill you if you lose the phone, but it’s an otherwise useful and convenient service.

While they don’t offer breakfast at the hotel, you’re near enough Nishiki Market and dozens of bakeries and cafes that it doesn’t really matter. Just have a quick cup of coffee in the morning before heading out to eat.
For a comfortable and convenient stay at decent mid-range prices, Nest at Nishiki Kyoto is a great choice. The English-speaking staff are especially friendly and helpful, and altogether it feels like a home away from home for many guests. If you have the time, give yourself a little time to relax in the room when you stay here!
