A stay at Capsule Hotel Anshin Oyado Premium Kyoto Shijo Karasuma is like signing up for a spa retreat. Amazing baths, comfortable beds, great breakfast, peaceful surroundings – capsule hotel experiences don’t get better than this!

Capsule Hotel Anshin Oyado Premium Kyoto Shijo Karasuma has a real mouthful of a name. That odd detail aside, this is one capsule hotel to put at the top of your bucket list if it’s a capsule hotel experience you’re after.
They’ve basically taken a hotel room and pared it down to the essentials without sacrificing comfort or functionality. Each capsule even has a TV! Some of the capsules have bunk beds – almost like actual beds – along with a small workspace, rather like a writing studio.

This hotel is pretty great if you work remotely, don’t want to sacrifice privacy while traveling on a budget, and want decent WiFi for working too. But, if you want to meet other digital nomads, you probably can, too. The ‘time lounge’ cafe space is also a co-working space during the daytime.

We also love the public bathing facilities here. Short of going to an onsen in the mountains, it’s so relaxing that this is as close as you’re going to get. It even has an outdoor bath (rotenburo) that’s great for tired muscles after a long day of walking; we highly recommend soaking here at night! They’re not short on beauty products here either – a few different shampoos, shower gels, lotions, shaving kits, hairdryers, even some toner and moisturizer. Your entire facial routine is taken care of here.

At this capsule hotel, though, it’s all about Japanese-style bathing, so the only shower spaces are as in an onsen right next to the communal baths. If you prefer your baths more private, skip this capsule hotel.
The breakfast buffet is admirable, especially considering it’s a capsule hotel. There’s a rather decent vegetable curry as part of the selection. We also like that you can drink draft beer, sake, highballs, and a few other cocktails at JPY750 an hour between 5pm and 3am every day. That’s amazing value for money!
Some people might find the constant ‘relaxation’ music supremely irritating – it’s the kind you hear in spas and wellness centers, and you’ll even hear it in the toilets. Yes, short of retreating to your capsule, you’re going to hear it in all the communal areas. Still, we don’t think it’s a deal-breaker. Every other aspect of this capsule hotel more than makes up for this minor downside.

Lastly, capsule hotels like this are also not ideal if you’re traveling as a heterosexual couple. This place is gender-segregated, so the only time you’ll really see your significant other inside this hotel is over breakfast. But if you’re looking for a peaceful few days by yourself or with a friend, this is a fun, relaxing, and unique experience in Kyoto.
