I really like the Garner Hotel Kyoto Shijo Karasuma: It’s an efficient, clean, well-run and convenient hotel right on a subway line and close to downtown. With rates that sometimes drop close to US$100 per room, it’s a fantastic choice for budget travelers.

Laundry room at the Garner Hotel Kyoto Shijo Karasuma.
The Garner Hotel Kyoto Shijo Karasuma is right on Karasuma Street, which is one of Kyoto’s main streets and the subway runs right beneath it, so it’s super convenient for transport. The name is a little misleading: it’s actually closer to Gojo than Shijo, but it’s still very close to downtown and you could walk to Kyoto Station from here as well in about 15 minutes.

The Garner is clean and surprisingly attractive given the price. I’ll never be a fan of contactless check-in but it’s probably why they can charge such low rates. Rooms are comfortable and clean. The staff is helpful and there are laundry facilities. So, if you’re on a limited budget and want a hotel close to downtown, this is a great choice and we highly recommend it!
