Hassun is a superb little restaurant in the heart of Gion that serves excellent kappo cuisine. It’s the perfect place for a special night out in Kyoto.

Kappo is a simpler version of kaiseki that is usually eaten at a counter rather than at tables. Hassun is a great example of the genre: it captures the refined elegance of kaiseki without the stiff formality. Having received a Michelin star, the restaurant has become familiar with foreign diners and there are usually English-speaking staff on hand.
The ¥11,000 lunch includes eight courses and it’s a great way to sample the fare without breaking the bank. Dinner courses run between ¥20,000 and ¥30,000. Reservations can be made via online booking sites and hotel or credit card concierges.
Given its accessibility to foreigners, superb cuisine and ability to reserve online, we consider Hassun one of the better places to sample Japan’s haute cuisine.
