Situated a short walk west of Shijo-Karasuma and Shijo stations, Hotel Mystays Kyoto Shijo is a good and inexpensive downtown hotel. Rooms are comfortable, and the multiple bus connections nearby make it a great base for exploring the rest of the city.

Hotel Mystays Kyoto Shijo is a decent, inexpensive business hotel in the Shijo area. Walking westwards will take you to the central shopping area. In addition to the subway stations nearby, there are many bus stops connecting you to all parts of the city, from Arashiyama to Kyoto Station. It’s a great base for exploring the city.

As expected of the MyStays brand, the ensuite rooms are modern, clean, and functional. They’re not terribly large, but this is to be expected of Japanese hotel rooms. (Don’t worry – they’re not shoeboxes!) They come equipped with all the amenities you expect from a business hotel, from free high-speed WiFi to laundry machines. The TV is quite small, but that’s not really an issue given the lack of English-language channels. Why watch TV when you could be out exploring, anyway?
Like an increasing number of hotels in Japan these days, Hotel MyStays Kyoto Shijo also provides smartphones for guests to use during their stay. These “handy phones” are provided free of charge, and allow you to make free domestic calls, browse the internet and find your way around town. They’ll bill you if you lose the phone, but it’s an otherwise useful and convenient service.

Breakfast here is average and nothing to really write home about. The buffet choices aren’t bad, but it can also get pretty crowded at breakfast if you’re here during peak seasons like cherry blossom or autumn leaves time – this hotel is quite popular with tour groups. If you’re particular about your morning meal, we suggest skipping the hotel breakfast and either picking something up from the convenience store nearby, or checking out bakeries in town. Did you know Kyoto has one of the highest per capita rates for bakeries?
Overall, Hotel MyStays Kyoto Shijo is decent. It’s a perfectly adequate choice for most travellers. Plus, the prices make it excellent value for money. It’s not plush, but who needs that when you’re going to be out all day exploring Kyoto?
