Located a little west of Shijo-Karasuma Station, ibis Styles Kyoto Shijo (formerly Hotel Unizo Kyoto Shijo Karasuma) is well-run budget hotel offering compact, comfortable rooms at reasonable rates. It’s a good value for money.

ibis Style’s ensuite, air-conditioned rooms aren’t luxurious, but they are clean and modern. If you’ve stayed in a Holiday Inn, this comes close. Amenities are decent, and will be adequate for most travelers, though some people may find the lack of an ice machine in the hotel a little curious. We like the on-site washing and drying facilities – everyone needs to do laundry on holiday – and it is well-located for shopping and sightseeing. The staff here are helpful and speak some English, too.

This branch of ibis Styles is typical of a Japanese hotel in that the rooms here are quite compact, i.e. they are definitely on the smaller side. This is fine for solo travellers who travel light. But if you have more suitcases or you’re travelling as a couple, consider plumping for a larger room. In fact, if you don’t mind not sharing a bed as a couple, book a twin room here, not a double room.
Japanese hotel rooms are generally compact at the best of times; twin rooms in general are always more spacious than doubles in Japan. ibis Styles Kyoto Shijo really drives that point home! Double rooms won’t have enough space to put two large, open suitcases on the floor.

Solo travellers have the option of booking a double room for single use, which will be a more comfortable option than the single room. Not all rooms at this hotel are non-smoking, so you’ll need to specify at the time of booking if you prefer this option.
The one real downside here is the breakfast option – or lack thereof. There’s no breakfast provided inside the hotel, so they give you tickets for the cafe next door instead. The food is well below average; we suggest skipping this and heading to another cafe or bakery in the surrounding area instead.
