Good rooms for less than US$100 per night in downtown Kyoto?! I have no idea how they do it, but Insomnia Kyoto Oike does it and that’s the important thing. Just steps from the most important subway stop in the city, Insomnia is a fantastic find for budget travelers and we highly recommend it.

Insomnia Kyoto Oike superior twin.
First, let’s start with the location: Insomnia is located less than one minute’s walk from Karasuma-Oike Station, which is where Kyoto’s two subway lines intersect, meaning you can get many places in the city with one quick subway ride. And, just as importantly, this intersection is the northwest corner of downtown Kyoto, so it’s an easy walk to all the shopping, dining and nightlife options you could want. And, for what it’s worth, Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace are also walking distance from the hotel.

Next, we have to discuss the rates: Rooms here are frequently less than US$100 per night, which is literally insane for a hotel of this quality in such a convenience location. In cherry blossom season they can reach as high as US$300 per night, but for most of the year, the rates here are firmly in the budget category. This means that Insomnia Kyoto Oike is one of the best hotel values in Kyoto.

Finally, we like the style of Insomnia. The lounge lobby has a cool boutique feel that you’ll enjoy returning to every day. And the rooms also have nice style, which you wouldn’t expect in a budget hotel. All in all, we are happy to recommend this hotel to anyway looking for location, cost performance and style.
