If you’d like to try a good countryside ryokan without having to head up into the Japan Alps or northern Honshu, you’ll like this ryokan in Kameoka, which is 20 minutes by train from Kyoto. It’s got real onsen baths and serves great food.

The ryokan is built around a great hot spring and the baths here are excellent. The rooms are spacious and most of them have garden views. Meals are excellent and some feature wagyu, which is sure to delight some Western guests.
