Karil is a veritable temple in the Japanese religion of curry rice. It’s one of our favorite places to go for sublime plates of artisanal curry. It’s a bit out of the way but it’s worth a special trip.

If you’ve read through this site, you know that we love Japanese curry rice (“wa-karei”) and we’re usually perfectly happy to eat the standard-issue item served in chain stores like Coco Ichibanya. However, we occasionally crave something a little more refined. That’s when we jump on the Karasuma Subway Line and get off at Marutamachi, from which it’s a short walk to Karil.
Karil offers both counter and table seating, which makes it a great option for solo travelers. They offer some of the standard favorites like chicken and pork curry, along with monthly specials and nods to India like keema curry. Prices run between ¥900 and ¥1300, making it a very reasonable meal option.
Check out the monthly special curry and if you’re vegetarian check out the bean and vegetable curry.
So, if you crave some great curry or just find yourself in need of a casual meal after exploring the nearby Kyoto Imperial Palace Park, head to Karil.
