Looking for a boutique hotel that won’t cost you an arm and a leg? A few nights at the gorgeously-appointed Kyoto Takakura Hotel Grandereverie gives you bang for your buck without breaking the bank. We especially love the service here – warm, thoughtful, and far above expectations.

Kyoto Takakura Hotel Grandreverie is a relatively new boutique hotel with just 16 rooms, but don’t let that put you off – it has a lot going for it. Location is great, for one. Rooms here are also large – well above the average for Japan – clean and beautifully designed. Some even have an attached private garden and bath for an extra-opulent soak at the end of the day. Rooms start at around JPY25,000 for a superior twin room, which is a steal considering the excellent facilities and spaciousness.

We really liked the lobby at this hotel. Venetian-style mosaics replicating paintings by Ito Jakuchu, one of the Eccentric painters of the Edo period, make the lobby feel more like an art gallery than the entrance to a hotel. Most hotels here, especially Japanese roykan, are pretty good at transporting you into a different space, but Grandreverie does live up to its name in this regard.

This hotel is operated by “Leaf,” a local magazine that frequently publishes issues and guides to Kyoto. Think of it as having five-star concierge services, without having to stay at the Four Seasons for all the insider knowledge to the city! The staff are friendly and helpful, and are especially willing to point you towards local restaurants. They even speak great English and Mandarin Chinese! It’s great when you want further insight into the less touristy side of Kyoto.
The personal touch doesn’t just come out in restaurant recommendations, though. One gets the sense that the Grandreverie staff are willing to go above and beyond their job titles to make customers happy. It’s all in the attention to details. Whether it’s bouquets and handwritten cards for couples celebrating their wedding anniversaries, or simply being helpful in accommodating requests for translations or restaurant bookings, the service at this hotel is spot on. Consider this hotel if you’re celebrating a special occasion in Kyoto.
