Manzaratei Sanjo Takakura is a great, casual izakaya on Sanjo Street in the heart of downtown Kyoto. With tasty grilled items like chicken and steak and excellent, fresh sashimi, it’s an excellent place for families, groups and couples.

Manzaratei offers both counter and table seating, and those who want to want their food cooked right before their eyes should grab counter seats if they’re open. With lots of dishes cooked on the teppan (iron griddle), Manzaratei can feel almost like a robatayaki place (robatayaki restaurants are designed around central grills).
The menu also includes plenty of vegetable and rice dishes in case your party includes vegetarians or vegans. While the restaurant makes no special accommodations for foreign guests, they seem comfortable with them and Google translate on your phone makes ordering relatively easy.
So, for a nice night out in downtown Kyoto, give Manzaratei a look. If you can get your hotel concierge to call and reserve, so much the better.
