With seating areas, fantastic bathrooms, and comfortable beds, Mimaru Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo is like a home away from home. As a bonus, it’s right in the middle of the city. Families with kids or groups of friends travelling together will love these dreamy serviced apartments!

Hotels are all very well for short stays, but hotel rooms can feel too impersonal, and can often wear on you after a few nights. It can also get expensive if you’re travelling as a family, as having to book two separate rooms rather than a single space is usually pricier. Serviced apartments, or ‘apartment hotels’ as they’re called here, are great alternatives to traditional hotel rooms. Having a kitchenette and lounge area makes all the difference, too – it makes an unfamiliar city feel like a home away from home.
Apartment hotels are an increasingly popular form of accommodation in Kyoto, especially for families with younger children or groups of friends travelling together. Whichever category you fall into, you’ll love Mimaru Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo if you’re staying in Kyoto for a longer spell.

Opened in November 2018, Mimaru Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo offers large, comfortable apartments accommodating up to 8 people. We like that you have a choice between Western-style or Japanese-style apartments. Those who want to try sleeping on futons can opt for the latter! All rooms also come with a seating area, which is fantastic for evening hangouts or breakfast gatherings. It’s a great choice for families with kids or groups of friends travelling together.

While there isn’t a fully-equipped kitchen here, there’s an electric kettle, fridge, microwave, and induction hob. If you’d like to cook a light meal or two, you can borrow a rice cooker and toaster from the front desk. We especially love that each apartment comes with a washing machine. It’s incredibly satisfying having clean clothes even as you’re living out of a suitcase!

In terms of location, Mimaru Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo isn’t too bad. It’s a little further west of the main shopping district where the Shinkyogoku and Teramachi shopping arcades are, but within easy walking distance to Nishiki Market (eastwards) and Nijo Castle (northwest). We think this is a plus, as you’ll get to see a quieter, more local side of Kyoto. Plus, take a little time to explore and you’ll find many great little restaurants in the neighbourhood. We also love its proximity to the super-local Sanjo-kai Shotengai Shopping Arcade.
Something to note here is that complimentary bed-making services are only available to groups staying for 4 consecutive nights or more – apartment hotels like this are clearly geared towards long-term travelers. Those staying for up to 3 nights will need to pay a little extra if you wish to have your bed made. That being said, rubbish bins will be emptied and towels will be changed daily.
