Located down a quiet side street slightly west of the main shopping district, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei is a lovely hotel at the upper end of the mid-range category. Rooms here are beautifully outfitted, the staff are great, and breakfast is delicious!

Those who like their hotels well-designed and relaxing will like Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei. The rooms are comfortable if on the more compact side, with all the amenities you might expect of a good hotel in this price range. The interior design throughout the hotel is wonderful. It’s a blend of modern and traditional elements.
Location-wise, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei is not right in the heart of the action – just west of it – but it’s walking distance to the center where all the shopping is. We think it’s a plus point, since the area is generally a little removed from where all the tourists are. There are also a number of good restaurants in the area.
Japanese service standards are generally high, and this hotel is no exception. The staff here are courteous and helpful, and communicating in English isn’t a problem at all. A special mention must go to the breakfast buffet here. It’s a damn sight better than many other hotels in Kyoto, with an excellent range of side dishes. We particularly love the use of local vegetables here!

Like an increasing number of hotels in Japan these days, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei also provides smartphones for guests to use during their stay. These “handy phones” are provided free of charge, and allow you to make free domestic calls, browse the internet and find your way around town. They’ll bill you if you lose the phone, but it’s an otherwise useful and convenient service.
Rooms at Shinmachi Bettei are en-suite, but we recommend trying out the public baths on the ground floor. It’s open until after midnight, and we love a late night soak here. You’ll need to bring towels from your rooms, but otherwise most of the amenities you’ll need are in the changing room area. We like the POLA branded toiletries!
Tattooed guests should have stickers to cover their tattoos, just in case. Attitudes towards prohibiting tattooed guests from using public baths in Japan are relaxing a little, though it may be some time before these bans disappear completely.
While room rates here are typically about right for this class of hotel during low seasons, they raise them exponentially at peak times of the year, such as cherry blossom season. As is true of many hotels like this in Kyoto, a stay here is much better value if you’re visiting at less busy times of the year, like late winter or early summer.
