If you want to sample some top-grade wagyu (Japanese beef), then Ginkakuji Onishi is highly recommended. Hidden away near Kyoto City Hall, it’s a must-try destination for meat lovers.

You might be puzzled by the “Ginkakuji” in the name (since the temple is several kilometers away in northern Higashiyama). The reason is that this restaurant is a branch of the famous butcher shop up near the temple.
Onishi serves only the very best wagyu and they do it in the style of yakiniku (Korean barbeque), unlike the more common teppanyaki style of many wagyu specialists. It’s certainly a great way to enjoy this sublime beef.
There are both counter and table seats. You’ll want to have your hotel call to reserve in advance, since the restaurant is popular and walk-ins may not be accepted on some evenings.
Expect to pay between ¥10,000 and ¥15,000 per person, not including drinks (the restaurant has a great wine list). Considering what this would cost back home (if you could even find meat of this grade), we consider this a great value.
