Located a short walk south of Kyoto Station, Piece Hostel Kyoto is a great choice for budget travellers and backpackers. It’s clean, comfortable, conveniently located, friendly, and most importantly, cheap. The staff also speak fluent English!

Mention hostels and some people might immediately think of loud spaces, dirty shared facilities, and dingy surroundings. But whoever said inexpensive hostels automatically meant low-quality? Travellers looking for comfort on a budget need look no further. Piece Hostel Kyoto is one example of a good Japanese hostel providing quality stays.
There are dormitories with 18 beds or 6 beds, all mixed gender use. Luckily, like most decent hostels in Japan, these bunk beds come with curtains. Travelling on a budget doesn’t have to mean sacrificing privacy! The personal bedside light means being able to do a spot of reading or work in bed. We also love the luggage space within the bed for you to store a suitcase or backpack – a rarity in most hostels.

The shared bathroom and shower facilities are clean and new, with good water pressure. A special mention must go to the comfortable memory foam mattresses, and the pillow shelves on each floor. You can basically grab an additional pillow or swap your current one for another if it’s not comfortable enough for you.

If you’d rather have a little more privacy when travelling with a friend or significant other, there’s a private twin room (with twin bunk beds), or a private double room with a king-sized bed. Price-wise, the double room isn’t all that dissimilar to a business hotel though, and it’s not ensuite. If you just need a private room with someone, you may be better off staying in an actual hotel rather than this hostel.

In terms of other facilities, we love that this hostel has pretty much anything you could ask for as a budget traveller. Washing machine and dryer? Check. Hairdryers? Got it. Free breakfast? They have it! Breakfast consists of bread, potato salad, eggs, rice, pickles, and miso soup – perfect for fueling your morning walk. There’s a kitchen if you want to cook, communal computers for any research, fast WiFi, bikes for rental, and even free tea and coffee. It’s really excellent value for money.
As expected of good hostels, there are a number of things here that make it easier to mingle with other guests. Piece Hostel organises free evening events such as cinema nights, cooking classes, and happy hour (cheap drinks!) which makes meeting fellow travellers easy. The staff are friendly, speak fluent English, and are happy to help you with what to see and how to get there.

Location-wise, it’s highly convenient. It’s a short 5-minute walk from Kyoto Station, and also within walking distance to other attractions like Higashi-Honganji Temple, Toji Temple, Kyoto Railway Museum, and Shosei-en Garden. While it’s not right in the heart of downtown Kyoto, there’s no shortage of train and bus connections.
It is a great base for exploring areas outside of Kyoto too, and especially if you’re travelling with a JR Pass. Day trips to Uji, Nara, Arashiyama, Himeji, Osaka, or Hiroshima are made extremely easy by hopping on the bullet train or one of the multiple train connections.
