A cheap traveler’s guesthouse at the north end of town, Ryokan Rakucho is popular with long-termers and returnees. It’s a friendly place in a pleasant suburban neighborhood.

This longstanding foreigner-friendly guesthouse way up near the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a homey atmosphere, a friendly reception and you don’t mind making a daily trek to the sightseeing districts (if you’re going to stay here, renting a bicycle is almost a must). The whole building is entirely non-smoking and there’s a lot of green in the surrounding area, making it a healthy and relaxing place to stay.
