A decent economy hotel located in the heart of downtown Kyoto, Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kyoto-Shijokarasuma is a comfortable city hotel that’s good value for money. We suggest skipping breakfast; the amenities are good.

If you want to be centrally located, Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kyoto-Shijokarasuma is a pretty good choice. It’s a mere 3-minute walk from Karasuma Station, while the Gion district is a 15-minute walk away. The walk will take you along the Kamogawa River – always a good thing to do in this city!

As a hotel, the facilities are entirely decent for the location. Size-wise, they’re on the compact side, which is typical for Japanese hotels – we wouldn’t recommend many large suitcases in most of the rooms. Some of the higher-grade rooms are pretty spacious though.
That being said, each ensuite room does come with everything you might expect of a good hotel. There’s a fridge, hair dryer, sleepwear, electric kettle, tea, and TV. The free WiFi is fast enough too. The carpets in some

Interestingly enough, you can pick up a fair variety of extra amenities from the hotel lobby for in-room use, such as bath salts, facial products and toiletries, face masks and more. Sadly, this doesn’t include body moisturiser, but that’s not really a complaint. There’s also tea, and complimentary coffee from a machine in the lobby.

The breakfast buffet here is decent but nothing to really write home about – and on the expensive side for the limited variety of items available. We suggest skipping the hotel breakfast and either picking something up from the convenience store downstairs, or checking out bakeries nearby. There’s also Daimaru’s excellent basement food hall if you want to pick up breakfast for the next morning.
We like that this Sotetsu Fresa has a coin-operated washing machine and dryer. It’s not exactly the cheapest to use – JPY300 a pop, and then JPY100 per 30 minutes of drying – but at least you won’t have to purchase additional detergent. It’s great if you’re on a long journey and need a place to wash your clothes.
