Sushi Ryori Nakata is a cozy and welcoming sushi specialist in the heart of downtown, a very short walk from the Shijo-Karasuma intersection. With fresh ingredients, careful preparation and beautiful presentation, Nakata is a great midrange sushi place.

Nakata is on the second floor of the Za Rakuchin Yokocho dining complex; look for the white exterior and large white lantern. Upon entry, you’ll notice that Nakata doesn’t look much like other sushi places: it consists of 10 seats arranged around an island in the middle of the restaurant. This unique arrangement allows you to see the careful actions of the sushi chef.

The menu here changes monthly so there’s no point in listing particular dishes. However, we can tell you that it will likely be some of the best sushi you’ve ever had. Some of it will be typical nigiri sushi (standard pieces of fish on a rectangle of rice), while other dishes will involve some cooking, frying or interesting sauces. The common thread is that it will be tasty and memorable.

Courses cost between ¥8000 and ¥10,000, which is an amazing deal for sushi of this quality. Nakata can be reserved via online reservation sites or you can have the concierge at your hotel call.
