Sushiro Kyoto Gion is the perfect place for a casual and fun sushi lunch or dinner while exploring Gion and Southern Higashiyama, especially if you have kids, who tend to love automatic sushi places (kaiten sushi).

I happened upon this place the other day while walking from Maruyama-koen Park toward downtown Kyoto. I knew the Sushiro chain from several good meals I’ve had at their other branches in Japan, including a great branch near Tokyo Station.
I love sushi and I’m no sushi snob: Sure, I love a good meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant as much as the next guy, but I’m also delighted to wolf down cheap and tasty delights at a good automatic sushi place. Yes, sushi purists would scoff at mayonnaise on sushi, but that just means there’s more left for me. And, if your kids are anything like mine, I’m pretty sure they’ll love this place.

For about ¥3,000 you can really fill up here and enjoy some nice items like toro (fatty tuna belly) and you could do a simple lunch here for less than ¥2,000. And don’t worry if your kids don’t like raw fish: they’ve got lots of nice fried and cooked dishes and some tasty desserts. And the touch screen menus, which you can switch to English make ordering a breeze.
There might be a short line when you arrive but the lines tend to move fast here, especially away from peak meal times.
