Tucked away in Kyoto is a shop that preserves a form of tobacco culture most of Japan has long since left behind. Tanigawa Seijiro Shoten, founded in the Kyoho era (1716–1736), is the country’s only remaining specialist in kiseru – traditional Japanese tobacco pipes.

A kiseru is a delicate object. The bowl (hizara) and mouthpiece (suikuchi) are typically made of metal, often brass, while the long, slender shaft (rau) that connects them is fashioned from bamboo. Compared with Western pipes, the bowl is strikingly small – just large enough to hold a pinch of finely shredded tobacco.
That tobacco, known as kizami tabako, is cut extraordinarily thin – sometimes finer than a human hair. This allows it to be rolled lightly between the fingers and placed into the tiny bowl. According to the proprietor, such precision cutting has roots in techniques developed for sword-making.

Historically, kiseru were less about prolonged smoking and more about savoring flavor. The tobacco is briefly heated – traditionally using charcoal from a small brazier – producing a short, concentrated draw. The experience is closer to tasting than to continuous smoking, and was often accompanied by a set of implements gathered on a tabako-bon (tobacco tray), which also appears in tea ceremony settings.
Today, few people use kiseru in daily life. Most visitors who step into Tanigawa Seijiro Shoten come out of curiosity – drawn by the craftsmanship, the history, and the quiet sense of continuity the shop embodies.
It’s a small place, easy to miss. But for those interested in the finer textures of Kyoto culture, it offers a glimpse into a world that has almost entirely disappeared.
