Kobe has a wide range of hotels and guesthouses catering to all budgets. Here, we introduce the main hotels located in central Kobe (in the main districts of the city).

Hotel Okura Kobe

Located right in front of Meriken Park on the Kobe waterfront, Hotel Okura Kobe is a short walk from most attractions in the Motomachi area, including Harbourland and Chinatown. The hotel offers a free shuttle service from Sannomiya Station that runs every 20 minutes or so.
Rooms are relatively spacious by Japanese standards, with lovely views of the surrounding bay area. It should be noted that the decor and facilities are a little dated; but that’s to be expected since it’s been open for 30-odd years. Beds are on the firm side. The breakfast buffet here is very decent.
There’s a fitness centre and swimming pool onsite, but be warned that even hotel guests will have to pay a fee to use these facilities. Having either of these is a rarity at Japanese hotels; and charging when they do is common practice. Consider yourself forewarned.

Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel

If it’s a comfortable and convenient stay you’re looking for, the Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel is an excellent choice. Rooms are large by Japanese standards, with gorgeous views of the harbour. We like the bathroom with its separate shower and bathtub, as well as the modern toilets. Breakfast is delicious and made even better being served on the 17th floor. However, you’re much better off skipping the hotel restaurants and heading out to town for dinner. The hotel also offers a free shuttle bus to and from the station.

Centurion Hotel Grand Kobe Station
Centurion Hotel Grand Kobe Station – image © Booking.com
Conveniently located right at Kobe Station and within walking distance of Meriken Park, a stay at the Centurion Hotel generally represents good value for money. Rooms are decently-sized for Japanese hotels, but not palatial. They’re clean and modern if basic, but well-outfitted with all the amenities you need. We especially like the showers with their high water pressure, and that the room windows actually open–that’s not always the case at Japanese hotels. Ask for rooms on the higher floors if possible. Breakfast is alright, but nothing to write home about. It’s not a bad place to spend a few nights.

Hotel La Suite Kobe Harborland
Hotel La Suite Kobe Harborland – image © Booking.com
If you’re looking for a special hotel that’s a cut above the rest, give La Suite Kobe Harborland a whirl. Those who have stayed at the Ritz or the Peninsula can expect similar levels of service. Rooms here are on the extra-luxe side – suites even come with jacuzzi baths and massage chairs! That’s not to mention the splendid views of the surrounding harbour. While the hotel breakfast is delicious, eating in the hotel at dinnertime gets pricey. We suggest skipping the hotel restaurants and room service, and heading out to town for dinner instead. A stay here does come at a price, but it’s a great choice if you’re willing to splash out.

Kobe Motomachi Tokyu REI Hotel
Kobe Motomachi Tokyu REI Hotel – image © Booking.com
Conveniently located near Motomachi Station, this hotel is great for those who want to be near most tourist attractions. It’s a short walk to Chinatown as well as to the waterfront. Rooms are clean, compact and functional, with good WiFi, but we particularly like the walk-in shower. While the room is well-soundproofed, light sleepers may find the air-conditioning in the room a little loud. Consider earplugs. Breakfast is decent though options are limited; still, the free coffee and tea from 3pm onwards in the lounge might make up for it. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful. Incidentally, some guests may also find multiple sources of piped-in music in the lobby a little irritating, but it’s not exactly a dealbreaker.

Kobe Sannomiya Union Hotel
Kobe Sannomiya Union Hotel – image © Booking.com
Union Hotel isn’t luxurious by any means, but it is a decent, budget-friendly choice for a short stay in Kobe, especially for business travellers. Rooms are clean, quiet, and compact, and equipped with everything you need. Hair dryers are very necessary! Pillows are on the hard side, but this isn’t unusual for Japanese hotels. A special mention must go to the hotel staff, who are warm and accommodating. The breakfast buffet has a surprisingly wide variety of dishes. We like the free shuttle bus service to and from Sannomiya Station, too. Our only gripe is that WiFi signal in the rooms can be a little weak.

ANA Crowne Plaza Kobe

ANA Crowne Plaza Kobe is a 5-star hotel located right next to Shin-Kobe Station. Location-wise, it’s convenient if you’re planning on day trips by bullet train out to Kyoto, Osaka, or Himeji; it’s also right next to the cable car that takes you to Nunobiki Herb Garden. Rooms are relatively spacious, with large bathtubs in the ensuite bathroom, and good views at the higher levels. We especially like the comfortable pillows, toiletries, and amenities such as bath salts and eye masks in the rooms. Breakfast has enough variety between Japanese and Western choices to keep most people happy. The 24-hour fitness centre on site is a real rarity in Japan, so if having a hotel gym is important to you, we recommend booking a stay here. The hotel staff are professional and helpful if not particularly effusive. Overall, a pleasant and reasonably priced hotel stay.

Kobe Portopia Hotel
Kobe Portopia Hotel – image © Booking.com
Located out on Port Island near Kobe Airport, Kobe Portopia Hotel is popular with business travellers attending conferences at the proximal exhibition centre. Rooms are comfortable, and large for Japan, and well-outfitted with all the amenities you might need. The room size in particular might explain the slightly higher prices. The breakfast buffet is pretty decent, and the splendid views from the 30th floor don’t hurt either. The hotel also has a swimming pool and fitness centre, but you’ll need to pay extra to use them. Don’t be too surprised; this is common practice in Japan. While Portopia Hotel isn’t centrally located, the free shuttle service to Sannomiya Station makes up for the mild inconvenience. Alternatively, it’s only 10 minutes by train into central Kobe.

Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kobe Sannomiya

We like that this hotel is centrally located right near Sannomiya Station. The area has many bars and restaurants, so you won’t be short on eating options or places to check out. Rooms at Sotetsu Fresa Inn are compact but well-equipped with everything you might need; we especially appreciate the USB sockets and the shower with high water pressure. The hotel staff are generally friendly and helpful. Conveniently, there’s a coin-operated laundry in the hotel. One small downside: the buffet breakfast is made up of entirely Japanese options – fine if you like Japanese food – but there are many bakeries in Kobe if you’re hankering after bread and pastries in the morning. Luckily, there’s coffee for those of us who need a jolt of caffeine to start the day.

UNIZO INN Kobe Sannomiya

Opened in 2018, this is a relatively new hotel located between Sannomiya and Shin-Kobe Station. It’s located a little distance from train stations, making it fairly quiet and peaceful, but it might be a little inconvenient if you have many suitcases. Rooms are clean, tidy, and comfortable. In addition to the usual amenities, we like that there’s a coffee maker, a universal power adapter, and a wooden board for laptop work in bed. The hotel also has a coin-operated laundry machine. If you’re not keen on breakfast at the hotel, there are plenty of bakeries, cafes, and restaurants in the surrounding Sannomiya area. Overall, a stay here is decent value for money.

Arima Rokusai

Do you prefer Western-style sleeping arrangements, but still want to soak in a proper hot spring? Arima Rokusai has you covered. This 5-star resort is a fine option for travellers looking to stay overnight in Arima Onsen. Rooms are spacious, while the beds are comfortable and on the firm side. Breakfast and dinner are served buffet-style, and while dishes aren’t ultra-luxe, they’re good meals overall. There’s even an indoor pool if you can’t do without a swim on vacation. Best of all, there are hot spring baths with two different kinds of water piped in. We also like that check-out is at a leisurely 11:00am!

Right on Kobe Harbour, the Oriental is a luxury hotel with a twist. Reception is at the top and a stunning introduction to the whole area. Service is a strong point and the overall experience is of quality and care.
